They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't involved enough with them. If they aren't socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened. Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children. They can be extremely loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which could be disruptive for those who live in apartments or condos. Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin. Lolita's Care For a long time activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea. The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company – have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat. In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean not an actual concrete tank. If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet Like any animal species, a captive gold and blue macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live for up to 60 years. Lolita's Health While her beauty is evident However, her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see her returned to the wild. This shows that kidney disease is often a part in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity. Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific. After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can go swimming in the deep sea and perhaps be reunited with her orca mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
